A spokesperson for the
United States Marine Band told Access Hollywood that Beyonce’s
performance was not live, and offered further details to NBC News.
According
to the head of the Marine Corps Band, Beyonce’s performance was
pre-recorded. The music for the inauguration is pre-recorded in case
there is bad weather or extenuating circumstances, Colonel Colburn, the
Director of Marine Corps Band, told NBC News.
POLL: What do you think of Beyonce reportedly lip syncing ‘The Star Spangled Banner’ during Inauguration Day?
According
to Colburn, because Beyonce has been preparing for her Super Bowl
appearance, she did not have time to rehearse with the Marine Corps Band
and shared her concerns with the group.
Colburn
said from his vantage point, he did not know if Beyonce sang live to
the track and told NBC News, “it looked and sounded like she was singing
her heart out.”
A rep for Beyonce did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Access Hollywood on Tuesday.
If Beyonce did lip sync, it certainly isn’t the first time a pop star has done so.
In
2009, Ricky Minor requested that Jennifer Hudson lip-sync the National
Anthem at the Super Bowl. He also asked Faith Hill to lip sync “America
the Beautiful” at the same event.
“That’s
the right way to do it,” Ricky told the Associated Press at the time.
“There’s too many variables to go live. I would never recommend any
artist go live, because the slightest glitch would devastate the
performance.”
At the 2011 Super Bowl, Christina Aguilera sang the “Star Spangled Banner” live only to flub some of the lyrics.
A
rep for Kelly Clarkson told Access the former “American Idol” performed
“My Country, ‘Tis of Thee” live at the Presidential Inauguration on
Monday and did not lip sync.
