Celebrities Tweet Reaction to the Election of New Pope Francis I

The election of the new Pope Jorge Mario Bergoglio caused a bit of a frenzy on Twitter on March 13. Several celebrities took to the micro-blogging site to share their thoughts on the momentous occasion for all Catholics in the world. Some opt to sound funny while some others choose to be earnest.

Seth Rogen wrote, "There's also white smoke coming out of my office, but nobody seems that excited about it. #pope." Craig Ferguson said that the new pope would "replace [Jay] Leno on NBC at 1130." Seth MacFarlane contributed as well, saying, "To signal the conclave had not reached a decision, they released black smoke from a chimney and emptied 400 styrofoam cups into the street."

Other celebrities also came up with silly jokes. Actress Melissa Joan Hart wrote, "New pope? White smoke? Who got the gig?" "The Bachelor" host Chris Harrison even jokingly announced himself as the new Pope, "When I told @SeanLowe09 & @clmgiudici I'm ordained I never thought the Vatican would respond so fast #Whitesmoke."

Unlike others, the host of "The X-Factor (US)" Mario Lopez chose to give his earnest thought, saying, "Big moment for the church & for those of us who call ourselves Catholics. I hope Pope Francis comes with an open heart & open mind...#Faith." Former "The View" co-host Star Jones also chose to express her sincere hope despite her different belief, "I'm not Catholic...but am excited by the election of #NewPope. May he be blessed with wisdom & the love of Christ."

Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected on March 13 to replace Pope Benedict XVI . From now on, he will be known as Pope Francis I, the first Pope from Latin America.
